Yes, the SEC is cutthroat, but youd think a guy with Moorheads acumen would be able to weather it. And hes still young at 47. And yeah, Im ranking thesebased on how appealing I think they are, the kind of fit theyd be, and how much energy or excitement their arrival would inject into the program. FCS coaches, even the ones with championships, are always a gamble. Nebraska needs a new football coach. Hes certainly a good coach, but is he elite? Four of them were regarded as serious contenders for the nomination. That means 6-6 or even 7-5 might not be good enough for Nebraska, which absolutely has to hit a home run this time around. Weve seen him be an aggressive recruiter and theres no reason to think that would not continue if he were the head coach. Instead he kept the team competitive when it could have easily imploded. A big paycheck might make him reconsider. But his most impressive feat is going an insane 83-9 (54-4 in conference) as Ohio States head coach, during which he won 3 Big Ten titles and 1 national championship. His final year at Texas saw a massive recruiting drop, including reports that his own players were actively sabotaging visits. Look at the teams against which they have lost. The former was a perennial bottom feeder which he transformed into a conference champion, and the latter was reeling from the Art Briles scandal. Hes quietly leading one of the most competitive programs in the country, causing a ton of trouble for their opponents in the Mountain West. He brought Western Kentucky out of the basement and did the same at USF. Can the Huskers rebound? Why It Might Not: Setting aside the baggage that Malzahn allegedly would bring with a reportedly outspoken wife who creates drama, this guy seems entrenched in the deep South. Why It Might Not: The Huskers have had mixed results with first time head coaches who needed to learn the job on the fly. Cincinnati is going to the Big 12 soon. Barring a stunning breakthrough this season, hes just about reached the end of his rope and is likely to return to the field of college coaching. Nebraska would be an even tougher job. He also greatly benefited from Texas falling off and a Big 12 in flux with Missouri, Nebraska, and Texas A&M all leaving for other conferences. It could be possible for him to employ a similar turnaround at Nebraska. Why It Might Not: It remains to be seen how hell finish in Carolina, but if he were to wind up in Lincoln, there may be the sense that this is a low-bar retread hire. Unless Iowa State suffers a total collapse this year, hes going to be the top target for most major open head coaching jobs.
