So I got a basic instinct for listening to leads, whether it be a guitar solo or the lyric. They were one of the top bands in England at that time. Im serious. Don Ellis, who was running the west coast side of Columbia at the time, heard the tape and really liked the group. GQ: Journey had already made three records by the time you joined the band. They have machines for all the different muscles in your body. He is the major soloist in the band. AD: R&B was happening, and traditional jazz. You feel like youre on a high-wire all the time. Because I am gonna get this done, eventually. But I needed to be ready to lay down and do this thing. Speaking to Mojo in a recent interview, Wood, . AD: There's always the chance. I was going to the fair in my home town. I wanted to play violin when I was seven, but my parents wouldn't buy me one because they thought I would just waste the time and money. Do you have any idea what that feels like? Its no different. But Im sure that if they could have been successful the way they originally set out to be, that would have been fine with them. As I said in the beginning with you, theres something reverent about that, to me. I really had to let it all go. It felt so awesome, to see that song be used in that moment. And its what I really love. So I have a lawsuit against them. And theyre all good. Do you get tired of it being defined by his presence or his absence? I thought, Okay. I been uplifted when he called, but when heard "country/western" I went back down. I thought in my own mind that before you could even go out there and play, you had to be as good as the people you were listening to on records. Less means more to the average person. I still felt this panic to get a deal, get signed, maybe make another record. We went back, and we started writing Raised on Radio. But I recently heard another famous jazz drummer, and I got very bored. I got ProTools, and Im working on stuff. _[laughs] _Okay? leave t.hat .hole, the snare stands out big, and it still sounds like you're playing the bass drum on that beat. Together they were an all-star group. I was against that. I've been with them for about four years now. The iconic singer appeared onstage with his former bandmates as they each gave speeches, but did not perform with the group later in the event. Steve! Now I wanna go home for a while., **As a singer, were you dealing with a different set of demands? Lets go have some pizza. RM: You've had your own groups in the past. Did you get burned out? Yeah. But when I went through Liverpool on a tour with Zappa in 1971, out of all the people I knew in Liverpool, he was the only one who actually turned up backstage to shake my hand and say how well I was playing. It might appeal to all of the drummers in the world, but we only have X amount of drummers who are going to go out and buy that record. The next show is sold out. 'That's okay with me. He said he was having health issues, and he needed to have hip replacement, and this and that. And then, boom, Journey starts, and I was like, Oh, my God. I just couldnt believe it. It's one of those political things, part of the business, and I really shouldn't complain because I've been on a lot of records that have been hits. Next night. At certain times, I've had a drum lose its tone because it has been dropped and the shell has cracked, or something has gone wrong and it's deader than the other drums and I've had to replace It. I think it was in Denver, Coloradothey were opening for Emerson, Lake and Palmer at the time. I cant tell you when, but Im gonna get it done. It was suggested that I could tour and sit on a stool. I drank a lot. I dont want to be in the band anymore. And after we compiled enough material to go in and cut our first record Infinity, we all listened to it and went, Wow, theres something here. And the label was freakin out, they were lovin it. I have tried to talk to him, numerous times. This first album from the group would prove the most successful of the four issued under the Retaliation banner, entering at least one of the charts that existed at the time. And what that meant was that there was a period of time where I always felt, from Neal, that I had to prove myself worthy of the position I was trying to occupy in the group. Aynsley was very disappointed, but Bruce said, Aynsley, f it! But along with this, you have to print that I cant blame them. Okay. So I left them and was out of work for two weeks, which was the longest 1 had ever been out of work. Using your fingers makes em better. Theyre doing what theyre doing because they feel its what they want to do, and Im doing what Im doing because its what I feel I wanna do. And he said No, hes gotta do what hes gotta do. The matched grip keeps you simple enough to hit the drum that way. If you crack itits got so much integrity. And I think that proving myself was something that went on for quite some time with the. **. As soon as you get stuck into counting, you forget what is happening out front. And we ended up making two more recordswe did Look Into the Future and then Next, and each record sold progressively less than the last one, but we attained a huger live audience, because we were playing live so much. Then I'll jump in and push him a little bit into other areas. Cause we didnt sound alike. If the fill is part of the song? What happened was wed put out our first record, Journey, and I think we sold a little over 100,000 records. And then the next three days after that, I was terrible to be around. took years for me. I love doin it. And Jon was telling me, We want to know what you wanna do. I just dont hang out in that environment anymore. Aynsley had played with Frank Zappa, Jeff Beck, David Bowie and John Mayall. RM: What kind of practicing are you able to do on the road? I loved touring. Thats about all. He plays rhythm guitar and sings it for a while and we just add our parts to it. I didnt jump into that. Everything has to go through lawyers and management. There was several medical, non-surgical choices, and I tried all of those. I really, honestlyand you must print thisI really dont want to respond to what theyre doing, because what theyre doing is none of my business. And the reason I didnt realize that I was an alcoholic is that I didnt have to wake up in the morning and pound down a six-pack. But it seemed like, for my life, to save it, I had to stop and get out. And I think I made a lot of really bad decisions over the years, because I was messed up like that. Have you considered doing any teaching? I had a lot of double kicking happening and it almost sounds like there were two bass drums being used. During one of my first gigs with them, they gave me a drum solo. Then I did the A Hard Road album with him, and that helped me understand the songs a little better. The lost interview. RM: You're not opposed to electronic percussion in principle? And it just didnt happen. Call it the J-Boys. He goes to a restaurant, he goes through the little jukebox at the table, they go through the thing, he goes through Heart, and then he ends up with Tony Bennett, and he reaches in, puts a quarter in and pushes a button, and you think hes gonna play Tony Bennetthes a wiseguy, hes either gonna play some rock and roll or Tony Bennett, that was how they threw the scent off. I had not opened that up in over ten years. That only lasted for six months, because Mayall wanted me to stop playing as much as I was, and become more of a blues drummer. Would you ever be interested in doing regular studio work, such as commercials? What happened was, I guess Jon and Neal had signed off way before I did. Most of them are in L.A. RM: How did your professional career develop? Was that the last time you saw them? Sometimes I like to come out of a song, explode into life, and then create a dynamic situation. I was back in my house February 1stIll never forget that date. When I'm playing rock and roll with the Starship, if I sat there filling in all over the place, it would sound messy. Aynsley Dunbar. We did get a little bit trendy in spots, we all occasionally got a bit funny with our dressing, but we did not follow the New Wave thing, or the punk thing. And he was there for a brief time, until Herbie heard my tape and convinced them that they were gonna have to move from him to me. They all worked in the daytime and they'd come together at night to play jazz. Is it that way in England? They were really an amazing performing band. Journey made three records for Columbia with that line up. That kinda answers one of my questions. I had been through a lot of divorces, and probably a lot of em due to this problem, and I had to just really face everything on a straight level. The guy could sing amazingly well.
